Customized solutions to avoid, assess, manage, and remediate soil and groundwater contamination

Intertek-PSI’s environmental group partners with our geotechnical engineering, drilling, and testing solutions for preliminary site characterization, Phase I and II Environmental Site Assessments and contamination assessments.

Soil and groundwater assessments, through soil borings and monitoring wells, are the primary means of defining subsurface characteristics and evaluating the extent of environmental contamination. Contamination can be a result of leaking underground storage tanks, landfills and dumps, and unlined ponds or pits. Soil borings help define the geologic setting and provide the means of collecting subsurface soil samples, while monitoring wells provide the corresponding hydrogeologic and groundwater quality data. Monitoring wells can range in diameter from two to eight inches and down to a depth of 1,000 feet. Our licensed well drilling crews are thoroughly familiar with the safest installation procedures and operate under the supervision of our professional engineers and geologists.

Environmental drilling is significantly different from standard geotechnical drilling activities, requiring specialized equipment and advanced training for our Intertek-PSI drilling crews. In order to properly understand the requirements and precautions necessary for working in potentially contaminated environments, our environmental drilling crew’s receive the OSHA 40-hour health and safety training, and courses on equipment decontamination, soil samples analyzed by PID (Photoionization Detector), FID (Flame Ionization Detector), and OVA (Organic Vapor Analyzer), specialized drilling and sampling procedures, well installation and security, and the safe disposal of drill cuttings.

Our drilling crews are also trained to recognize the appearance of liquid contaminants such as oil, gasoline, or diesel fuel in soils and groundwater and along with our environmental group, determine the nature and extent of any contamination and the next steps in remediation, with considerations to the site conditions and regulatory requirements.
