Our expertise in IEC 60950 Testing and Certification will get your IT Equipment into more countries - in less time - than ever before

What is IEC 60950?

IEC 60950 is a safety standard for information technology equipment (ITE) that is published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). This standard specifies safety requirements for ITE, including electrical, mechanical, and thermal aspects, as well as protection against fire, radiation, and chemicals.

IEC/EN/UL/CSA 60950 "Safety of information technology equipment" standard is widely recognized and used by thousands of manufacturers of ITE around the world to ensure the safety of their products. Compliance with this standard is typically required in many countries as part of the regulatory approval process for the sale and distribution of ITE. It is one of the relatively few standards to be harmonized by standards-writing bodies globally to make the process as efficient as possible for manufacturers. The standard has since been replaced by IEC 62368-1 which is now the new safety standard for audio/video, information and communication technology equipment.

"December 20, 2020 was the date when IEC/UL/CSA 60950‐1 and IEC/UL/CSA 60065 was formally withdrawn. Manufacturers who wish to place products on the market will now need to meet IEC/UL 62368 to ensure compliance."

Intertek's IEC 60950 Solutions

Intertek has helped IT equipment manufacturers certify products to this standard for years, and our ETL Listed Mark can be found on product labels and packaging across North America. More than 1,000 listings currently exist in our ETL Directory under the 60950 standard alone - whether it’s a simple Listing, a Recognized Component, or a Classification.

Large, global manufacturers such as Ericsson, Raytheon, Alcatel-Lucent, Eaton, HP, Cisco, Toshiba, Panasonic and many more trust Intertek to test and certify products that generate billions of dollars in revenue. Small and mid-sized manufacturers rely on us to help them understand the global requirements, test and certify their products, and in some cases they rely on our certifications to add credibility to new technologies.

Ensuring that we can do it quickly and accurately is of the utmost concern to both Intertek and our clients. This is why we have 31 laboratories around the world accredited and approved to test to this standard. Whether the manufacturer is in China, Japan, Korea, Europe, US or Canada, we offer our clients local services in their own language to help them gain certification.

Transitioning from IEC 60950-1 to IEC 62368-1

As IEC 62368-1, the hazard-based standard for information technology and audio/visual equipment, replaced IEC 60950 and its localized versions back in December 2020. Intertek is ready to help clients bridge the gap to the new standard. We’re committed to helping manufacturers get products to market quickly so they can be more competitive.
