Impact, Overview, Fees and Action Required

Impact Statement: This SUN only impacts Certification Reports with reference to NSF 50 dated February 17, 2009 or older.

Overview of Changes:  This revision to the standard includes additional requirements to Suction fittings, PVC Hoses, Equalizer line (public pools), Exposed ridges, and Skimmer cleanability.  Specific details of new/revised requirements are found in table below.

Schedule:  So that shipping of products with Listing Marks will not be interrupted, an approximate schedule has been established to ensure Listing Reports are found compliant by Effective Date:

  • November 3, 2014 = 8 Month Report Review – Intertek will review all Reports. Update if compliance is verified or issue Findings Letter/Quote for any re-evaluations needed
  • January 1, 2015 = 6 Month Quote Cut-off – Quotes returned for necessary re-evaluations
  • June 1, 2015 = 30 Day Warning – Client advised of all non-compliant Reports to be Suspended
  • July 1, 2015= Effective Date – ATM Suspended for all non-compliant Reports

Fees:  An initial review of Listing Report (s) will be covered by a direct billing project and will be invoiced at not more than $500 per report.

Client Action Required:

Information – To assist our Engineer with review of your Listing Reports, please submit technical information in response to the new/revised paragraphs noted in the attached or explain why these new/revised requirements do not apply to your product (s).

Current Listings Not Active? – Please immediately identify any current Listing Reports or products that are no longer active and should be removed from our records. We will do this at no charge as long as Intertek is notified in writing prior to the review of your reports.

 
Description of New/Revised Technical Requirements

NOTE: Additions to existing requirements are underlined and deletions are shown lined out below.

Suction fittings

Suction fittings that are designed to be totally submerged for use in swimming pools and spa/hot tubs shall comply with ANSI/ASME A112.19.8 and the material requirements of Section 3 of this standard.

4.1.5 

PVC Hose

Helix or fabric reinforced flexible PVC hose, for use on circulation piping in pools, hot tubs, spas, and jetted bathtub units, shall comply with the following:

  • IAPMO PS-33;
  • the material requirements of Section 3; and
  • Annex B.1.5 after a 20,000 cycle strength test conducted in accordance with Annex B.1.4.
8.4.4 The equalizer line must have a cover that meets ANSI/ASME A 112.19.8.
8.5.2.3 

Requirement for evaluation of exposed ridges

After all structural testing is completed, the covers shall be evaluated for exposed ridges. Ridges shall be considered exposed when open to the atmosphere. Exposed ridges shall conform to section 8.5.3.

8.5.3 Skimmer cleanability
8.5.3.1 The cover shall be designed to be easily cleanable. Covers with interior exposed structural ridges shall conform to the following. Non-exposed structural ridges are exempt from section 8.5.3.1.1, 8.5.3.1.2 and 8.5.3.1.3.
8.5.3.1.1 Ridges with a height of less than ¼ in are exempt from radius or fillet requirements.
8.5.3.1.2 Ridges with a height greater than or equal to ¼ in shall have a minimum radius of ¼ in (0.25in, 6.4 mm) or provide a 135 degree, ¼ in fillet at the base of the ridges (See figure 1).
8.5.3.1.3 Ridges forming an open box, triangle, or any shape shall not have a depth greater than the internal width of the shape.
