Standard: ASTM C99 – Standard Test Method for Modulus of Rupture of Dimension Stone

Certification Required: N/A

Scope: Per ASTM C99: "This test method covers the determination of the modulus of rupture of all types of dimension stone except slate."

Applicable Products: Dimension stone (except slate)

Test Procedure: Specimens are cut down to a size of 4 by 8 by 2.25 in. The rift orientation is marked on each on each specimen, with five to be loaded parallel to the rift and five loaded perpendicular to the rift.A line is drawn on the center of one 8 in. by 4 in. face perpendicular to the long edge. Two more lines are drawn parallel to the center line at a distance of 3.5 in. Each specimen is then oven dried for 48 hours at a temperature of 140 ̊F. Weights are recorded at the 46th, 47th, and 48th hours to ensure the weight is the same. If they are not the same, then the specimens are dried longer until three successive hourly readings are taken at the same weight. Following conditioning, specimens are laid flatwise on two supports that are spaced 7 in. apart on a tensile testing machine. The loading fixture is center between the two supports. A load of 10 lbf (50 N) is applied and the supports and fixtures are checked to ensure that spacing is still correct and the specimen is still centered on the supports. The load is then applied at a rate of 1000 lbf/min (5000 N/min) until the specimen fails.

End Result: This test results in the average modulus of rupture for test specimens loaded parallel to the rift and specimens loaded perpendicular to the rift.
