Standard: ANSI Z21.97 – Outdoor Decorative Gas Appliances

Certification Required: Certification to ANSI Z21.97 is typically needed for gas decorative fire features designed for installation in an outdoor setting, such as an outdoor patio. These gas fire features are found in residential and commercial installations.

Scope: This standard applies to decorative gas fire features that can be automatically ignited or manually ignited, which may have an integrated fuel tank, or connected to a gas line supplied by a nearby building. These products can be portable, stationary, or built-in.

Applicable Products: ANSI Z21.97 is specific to outdoor gas fired products only. These products are generally gas firepits but can be freestanding or built-in gas fireplaces.

These products can be tested as a field evaluation and a field label at the final installed location. A field label is not a certification but is generally acceptable to local inspectors and authorities having jurisdiction (AHJ’s) in the United States.

Test Procedure: Outdoor gas fired appliances require several tests, including input rate (Btu/hr) verification, combustion tests, burner and pilot ignition tests, clearance to combustible construction tests, wind, and rain tests.

End Result: A A successful completion of these tests will result in specified clearances to combustible construction and a verified input rating in Btu/hr., which is eligible for product certification by Intertek.
