UL 2202: Standard Testing for EV Battery Chargers
Standard: UL 2202 – Standard for Safety: DC Charging Equipment for Electric Vehicles, harmonized to CSA C22.2 No.346:22 for Canada, and NMX-J-817-ANCE-2022 for Mexico.
Scope: UL 2202 outlines procedures to determine the safety of DC conductive charging equipment intended to be supplied with a maximum input voltage of 1000 V ac or 1500 V dc, for recharging the propulsion batteries in over-the-road electric vehicles (EV).
Applicable Products: This standard applies to off-board DC chargers (often referred as “Level 3” or “Fast Charge”) used to recharge propulsion batteries in electric vehicles, including hybrid and plug-in variants. While not required for on-board chargers, the electrical safety construction and testing requirements are best practice for all charging equipment.
Procedure: UL 2202, outlines a comprehensive suite of testing protocols and requirements designed to ensure the safety, reliability, and performance of DC charging equipment for electric vehicles. These are critical for verifying compliance and protecting users, vehicles, and infrastructure.
- Construction: This provides requirements for key aspects of the device from the frame and enclosure to mounting to internal wiring.
- Protection of Users Against Injury: Means shall be provided to reduce risk when the operation and maintenance of a unit by the user involves a risk to injury or electric shock.
- Performance Tests: Test such as Leakage current, Abnormal use, Static load test, ect.
- Manufacturing and Production Tests: Guidelines for Production-Line Dielectric Voltage-Withstand Test.
- Marking: Safety markings are tested for visibility, durability, and accuracy
End Result: As the EV market expands, ensuring compliance with UL 2202 is critical for manufacturers and suppliers of DC charging equipment. This standard supports safe, efficient, and interoperable charging infrastructure across North America.
Test Lab Locations: Detroit (Plymouth), MI, other sites in Germany and Greater China
