Intertek Launches REACH Auditing Services

Intertek offers supplier audit and assessment services to support REACH compliance assurance activities undertaken by retailers, manufacturers and importers of virtually all types of products from any industry. Intertek’s REACH audit service complements its comprehensive suite of REACH services including only representative, pre-registration and registration services; testing and dossier creation services; and project management outsourcing services. The EU’s Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals (REACH) regulation requires all chemicals that are manufactured in or imported into the European Union of one tonne or more in volume each year to be tested for health and safety and registered with a new central European authority. In order for a chemical, substance, preparation or finished article to be manufactured or sold in the EU, it must be REACH compliant.

For a product to be REACH compliant, its constituent components must be REACH compliant. Where access to the composition is not available for constituent components, supply chains and suppliers must provide evidence and declarations to prove to their customers that they have met REACH requirements. Yet, these declarations provide only limited assurance. Chain of custody control should therefore be an important part of any REACH compliance strategy. And, a balanced process of engagement and involvement of the supply chain, supported by auditing and monitoring, needs to be implemented to control risk and costs.
