Intertek Assists Companies with Product Development and Safety Assessment

[Ontario, Canada] - Intertek (www.intertek.com), the leading provider of quality and safety services to a wide range of industries, is pleased to announce that its scientists have been recognized for their work by the Risk Assessment Specialty Section of the Society of Toxicology (SOT).

Intertek's scientific and regulatory consultants provide services to the food, feed, cosmetic, consumer, chemical, and pharmaceutical industries, and undertake numerous projects to evaluate product safety and ascertain risks to consumers, patients, and the general public due to potential exposure to hazardous substances. Our work is often presented at scientific conferences, forums, and workshops, and published in the scientific literature. This year, Intertek will be presenting three scientific posters at the Society of Toxicology (SOT) Annual Meeting which is being held from March 10 to 14 in San Antonio, Texas. Each of these posters is based on recent projects. One of these posters has been designated by the Risk Assessment Specialty Section of the SOT as one of the “Top 10 Abstracts in Risk Assessment”. Intertek scientists who authored the poster include Dr. Joanne Wan, Dr. Jeffrey Card, Ms. Hana Fikree, Ms. Lois Haighton, and Dr. Valentia Lee-Brotherton.

Dr. Wan and her colleagues evaluated the level of concordance between tumors observed in experimental studies conducted with specific chemicals and those observed in humans exposed to the same chemicals. Their findings suggest that the degree of concordance is low, with no strong evidence of concordance at the level of the affected tissues. “This is an interesting finding, given the traditional use of these types of toxicology studies to evaluate potential human risk”, says Ms. Haighton, a senior scientific and regulatory consultant. “It will be interesting to see whether other evaluations with different groups of chemicals report similar findings, and how this may impact our thinking regarding the traditional cancer bioassay.” It should be noted that all of the data that were analysed were obtained from publically available studies.

The award-winning poster is being presented at the SOT Annual Meeting on March 13, 2013 from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM (abstract number 1942; poster board number 533). Intertek’s other two posters are being presented on March 12, 2013 from 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM (title: “Proposition 65 and Cancer Incidence in California”; abstract number 1550; poster board number 611) and March 13, 2013 from 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM (title: “Deriving Dermal Safe Harbor Levels for DEHP Relevant to Consumer Products for Adults”; abstract number 2244; poster board number 442).
