India published the Cookware, Utensils and Cans for Foods and Beverages (Quality Control) Order 2025

India published the 2025 Quality Control Order updating standards for cookware, utensils, and cans, requiring BIS Standard Mark compliance with phased deadlines for different enterprise sizes starting October 2025
The Ministry of Commerce & Industry (India) has issued the Cookware, Utensils and Cans for Foods and Beverages (Quality Control) Order, 2025, revoking the 2024 QCO.
The 2025 QCO mainly updates the standards that are required to be complied:
- IS 14756:2024 – Stainless Steel Utensils (Updated to new version)
- IS 1660:2024 – Wrought Aluminium Utensils (Updated to new version)
- IS 13983:1994 – Stainless Steel Sinks for Domestic Purposes
- IS 18427:2024 – Three‑piece round open‑top metal cans for foods & beverages (Newly added)
- IS 14407:2023 – Aluminium Cans for Beverages (Updated to new version)
Covered products must meet the above standards and display the BIS Standard Mark
The standards are applicable to:
- stainless steel utensils, including cooking, serving, table and storage utensils
- wrought and cast aluminium utensils
- stainless steel sinks for domestic use
- two-piece aluminium cans for the packaging of beverages
- three-piece round open-top metal cans
The applicable products shall comply with the requirements, including material, shape, workmanship and chemical.
Effective compliance timeline:
- General enterprises: from 1 October 2025
- Small enterprises: from 1 January 2026
- Micro enterprises: from 1 April 2026
