Cardiff, Wales: Intertek, a leading Total Quality Assurance provider to industries worldwide, is pleased to announce it has been appointed by marine energy technology developer Minesto, to provide technical support for advanced oceanographic modelling projects.

Under this three-year framework, the Intertek team will work alongside the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) and tidal energy experts from the universities of Bangor, Plymouth, Cardiff, Swansea and Manchester, to provide a broad range of specialist technical services. Supporting current and future projects at all Minesto’s sites, our services will include tidal current resource modelling, array energy extraction modelling, ocean circulation modelling, sediment transport modelling, and extreme and operational wave modelling. Intertek will work closely with Minesto throughout the framework period to ensure that the project models’ outputs are fully understood and reviewed in a consistent manner.

Minesto has novel technology that allows clean, renewable energy to be generated from tidal and ocean currents. It is currently engaged in activities for commercial scale-up of its Deep Green technology at several locations around the world, including site development of commercial tidal energy farms in the Holyhead Deep off Anglesey, North Wales, and in the Faroe Islands. In France, Minesto collaborates with the energy major EDF as part of the Tidal Stream Industry Energiser Project (TIGER), for the installation of a Deep Green power plant at the grid-connected Paimpol–Bréhat tidal site off the coast of Brittany. With the ability to extract energy from low current speeds, Minesto is also active in Taiwan, collaborating with local research expertise and businesses with the aim of harnessing energy from the continuously-flowing Kuroshio current.

Dr. Paul Evans, Intertek Energy & Water, said: “We are delighted to be working with one of the world leaders in tidal energy development to convert kinetic energy in marine currents into clean electricity. The potential for capturing and harnessing energy from the tides and oceanic currents in both the UK and overseas is vast, and Minesto’s innovative tidal energy device certainly offers exciting prospects going forward. Our appointment by Minesto represents a proud achievement for Intertek Energy & Water and we are delighted to be collaborating with industry experts to provide our world-leading technical services.”

Intertek has many years’ experience in marine consulting and the marine renewables industry. This includes hydrodynamic modelling, field survey management, geophysical and geotechnical assessments, metocean assessments, geographical information systems (GIS), as well as cabling engineering and environmental impact assessment.
