Liphook, Hampshire, UK:  Intertek, a leading Total Quality Assurance provider to industries worldwide, has been appointed by Global Offshore, a subsidiary of offshore engineering specialist Global Marine Group, to deliver the marine licence application and environmental supporting information for the Pentland Firth East Cable Replacement in Scotland. Intertek’s technical experts have worked extensively on marine environmental quality assurance solutions for subsea cable projects in the UK, Europe and internationally, where key subsea cable assurance services have included cable routing, constraints and feasibility studies, route engineering, survey management, environmental assessment and stakeholder engagement.

Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) proposes to install the replacement 33 kilovolt (kV) subsea electric power cable across the Pentland Firth, a strait that separates the Orkney Islands from Caithness in the north of Scotland. The existing Eastern cable is approaching the end of its operational life. Through SSEN’s asset integrity records and following recent visual inspections of the cable, it has been identified as a critical asset that requires replacement.

Pre-installation surveys were conducted, allowing Global Offshore to effectively plan the subsea cable installation and to inform the marine licensing process.  Intertek’s responsibilities include environmental assessment, oversight of specialist environmental studies including intertidal surveys and marine archaeology reviews, attendance at public consultation events and the preparation of a Construction Environmental Management Plan (CEMP).

Eric Houston, Intertek Project Director for the Pentland Firth Project, commented: “Intertek’s Energy & Water team brings a wealth of technical expertise and experience in the environmental assessment of marine cable projects. We are excited about the opportunity to support Global Offshore and SSEN with the delivery of marine consent for this critical cable replacement.”

Mike Daniel, Managing Director of Global Offshore said: “We’re pleased to be working together with the team at Intertek to deliver this early phase of the Pentland Firth East power cable installation project in readiness for installation work next year.”
