History of Intertek Cortland

Intertek’s Cortland, NY Laboratory is the largest in the Electrical network at greater than 137,000 sq. ft. This location opened in 1977, after relocating from New York City, where it all began with one of our founding fathers, Thomas Edison when he established the Lamp Testing Bureau in 1896 and which later became Electrical Testing Laboratories. To this day we still breathe the same air of innovation, safety and quality.

Throughout the years, the location has played a major role in many significant global events. Here are just a few key examples highlighted:

• Creating some of the initial HVAC test methods now used globally
• Evaluation of TSA security equipment post 9/11
• Supporting energy efficiency of items such as AV equipment and lighting
• Assisting manufacturers in verifying the performance of data transfer rates and losses in cabling products
• Testing 100,000’s of items of PPE including those supporting the response to the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic
• Supporting FAA and Military manufacturers in the evaluation to environmental extremes

Staffing nearly 300 employees, this laboratory houses experts with backgrounds in nearly all technical fields including but not limited to Electrical, Mechanical, Biology, Chemistry, Acoustical, Lighting, HVAC, and Air Quality. The variety of expertise combined with our state-of-the-art equipment and facility enables us to evaluate thousands of standards under one roof. Additionally, we are able to create custom, innovative solutions to evaluate nearly any product.
