ADDENDUM SUN: This ADDENDUM establishes the Continuing Certification approach to Enclosures for Electrical Equipment, and Extends the Effective Date to December 23, 2019. This ADDENDUM replaces SUN issued November 2, 2015.

Impact Statement: 

  • December 23, 2019 has been established as Effective Date for the change in certification requirements from 50E 1st Ed.
  • Existing certifications of these controllers to UL 50E will be allowed to maintain certification and not be withdrawn on or after the Effective Date of December 23, 2019, provided there are no changes to the enclosure design that require a certification decision in accordance with the latest published Standard Revision. See table below for a summary of requirements. For example, changes to the enclosure design, ratings, or the use of alternate components requiring a certification decision submitted on or after the Effective Date of December 23, 2019, the enclosure (in its entirety) will need to be evaluated to the latest Standard Revision, UL 50E 2nd Ed.
  • Until September 4, 2016, enclosures may be investigated to UL 50E 1st, or 2nd Ed. After the December 23, 2019, only the latest Standard Revision of UL 50E 2nd Ed. will be used for enclosure investigations.

Overview of Changes:

The second edition of UL 50E was issued to include the following requirements:

  • Addition of environmental Type ratings 3X, 3RX, and 3SX
  • Revisions to specify tightening torque for field installed screws and fasteners critical to maintaining the environmental integrity of an enclosure
  • Elimination of Hand Flexing Test for Gaskets.

8.1.3 New clause added;

Screws and screw type fasteners for doors or covers on enclosures not marked per Clause 9.8 shall be tightened to the following values:

a) A No. 6 screw capable of being tightened with a screwdriver shall be tightened to a torque of 1.36 N•m (12 lbf-in);

b) A No. 8 screw capable of being tightened with a screwdriver shall be tightened to a torque of 2.26 N•m (20 lbf-in);

c) A screw capable of being tightened with a screwdriver other than No. 6 or No. 8 shall be tightened to a torque of 3.96 N•m (35 lbf-in);

d) An unslotted, bolthead screw, direct-bearing or securing a clamp, shall be wrenchtightened to a torque of 18.1 N•m (160 lbf-in).
8.1.4  New clause added;

Screws and screw type fasteners for doors or covers on enclosures marked per Clause 9.8 shall be tightened to the specified value.

9.8.1  When tested per Clause 8.1.4, the specified torque value shall:

a) Be located on the enclosure and visible during installation, such as inside the cover or in the installation instructions shipped with the enclosure.

b) Consist of the following or equivalent: “Tighten screw to ___ N•m (in-lb)”.

c) Where different torque values are assigned to different screws, the markings shall be clear as to which torque value is assigned to which screw.
