Assessing the ability of oral care dentifrices to occlude dentine tubules is widely used as an indicator of reduction of sensitive teeth. Currently, in this sector, tubule occluding toothpastes are considered the most consumer-friendly and economic method for in-home treatment however novel products are also being developed which contain certain salts that can interact with saliva and precipitate within the tubules, thereby serving to further restrict fluid flow within them. In vitro methods for dentine tubule occlusion studies can generate insight to efficiently steer product development process prior to embarking on expensive clinical trials.

In this case study, our in vitro oral care scientists describe two approaches to study tooth dentine tubule occlusion for novel toothpastes, dentifrices or other oral care products.
