An anti-stain test is designed to compare the ability of oral care products to prevent stains from building up in the pellicle layer and on the surface of enamel. In vitro evaluation provides manufacturers of oral care products with a cost-effective tool for evaluating and benchmarking the anti-stain agents incorporated into oral care products.

In this case study, Intertek expert, Gavin Thomas describes a method is based on work published by Suszczynsky-Meister et al. which uses a 5-day staining protocol to compare the ability of oral care products to prevent and remove staining in the pellicle layer and in the porous surfaces of enamel.
