Intertek awarded International Olive Council (IOC) approval for global quality testing of olive oil

Intertek, a leading Total Quality Assurance provider to industries worldwide, is pleased to announce its food testing laboratory in Turkey, has been awarded Type A recognition by the International Olive Council (IOC) for their global olive oil quality and food testing solutions through 2020. Type A recognition includes testing protocols that measure the levels of acidity, peroxide, moisture and volatile matter, and insoluble impurities in light petroleum.

The IOC awards recognition to testing facilities around the globe that strictly adhere to recommended methods of olive oil analysis. IOC Recognised Laboratories must meet the following criteria to maintain accreditation:

  • Meet IOC standards and ISO/IEC 17025 approval;
  • Use only IOC-specified test methods;
  • Designate special technical experts; and
  • Perform proficiency tests by IOC every year.

The technological advances in fats and oils analysis has been accompanied by an increasing awareness of the need for more effective control of the purity and quality of the olive oils that are sold, mainly in markets where olive oil consumption is being promoted. This increased awareness prompted the IOC to invite olive oil chemistry experts from its member countries to collaborate in searching for methods to detect fraud.

Since its beginning, the IOC has adopted rules for the award of recognition to testing laboratories, which prove they are proficient in applying the methods of analysis recommended by the IOC. The IOC is the only intergovernmental organisation in the world that brings together producers and consumers of olive oil and table olive products.
