Chicago, IL - Intertek (www.intertek.com) the leading provider of quality and safety services to a wide range of industries, announces its approval as a Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) accredited thirdparty testing lab for certification of children’s bicycle helmets. As a CPSC accredited lab, Intertek will provide bicycle helmet manufacturers with the required testing needed to comply with new certification requirements for 16 CFR part 1203.

The CPSC recently voted to lift their stay of the testing and certification requirements for several children’s products, including bicycle helmets intended for children 12 and under. For children’s bicycle helmets manufactured after February 10, 2010, manufacturers will be required to provide a certificate of conformity based on testing at a third-party laboratory, a departure from previous manufacturer-based testing programs.

“This accreditation as an approved testing lab for bicycle helmets allows Intertek to improve overall service to manufacturers. We continue to expand the product categories for which we can test, and our customers are the direct beneficiaries of that,” said Tom Connaughton, Director of Life Safety and Security Products at Intertek. “Adding additional scope to our existing network of CPSC accredited labs provides a much faster, more efficient approval process for our clients.”

Intertek has provided over 30 years of helmet testing services though strategic partnerships with various certification agencies including the Safety Equipment Institute (SEI) and the Hockey Equipment Certification  Council (HECC). With excellent service and faster turnaround on testing and certification, Intertek offers manufacturers the ability to stay true to their commitment to safety while remaining competitive in the marketplace.

The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (CPSIA) was passed by U.S. Congress and signed into law by President Bush on Aug. 14, 2008. CPSIA is designed to allow the CPSC to better regulate the safety of products made and imported for sale in the U.S. CPSIA also contains regulations that are intended to make products for children under age 12, such as bicycle helmets, safer by requiring manufacturers and importers to show that these products do not have harmful levels of lead and phthalates.
