The North American standard for Energy Storage Systems and Equipment is ANSI/CAN/UL 9540. This standard addresses the safety of Energy Storage Systems (ESS) that are intended to store energy from power or other sources and provide electrical or other types of energy to loads or power conversion equipment.

ANSI/CAN/UL 9540A, Test Method for Evaluating Thermal Runaway Fire Propagation in Battery Energy Storage Systems, was developed to address fire safety hazards in the United States and Canada. It also provides data to manufacturers to see if their product meets regulations.
