On Dec 20, 2021, the Consumer Affairs Agency of Japan amended the Household Goods Quality Labeling Act. This amendment relates to the generic names for polyacrylonitrile synthetic fibers which are used in textile product labeling.

The amendment requires that the generic fiber name of Modacrylic ”モダクリル” should be used for acrylic type fiber in which the acrylonitrile unit are < 85%. This was previously designated under “others” by the regulation.

The designated terms of polyacrylonitrile synthetic fiber in which the acrylonitrile unit are > 85% is unchanged and this should continue to be indicated as “アクリル”.

The designated term revision under the Household Goods Quality Labelling Act (Act No. 104 of 1962) became effective on Jan 1, 2022. The transition period lasts from Jan 1 to Dec 31, 2022. Manufacturers and importers of subject merchandise must label related products with the new term by Dec 31, 2022.
