Huqiu Zhang, PhD

Huqiu Zhang joined Intertek in 2013 as Vice President, Chemical Management, focusing on consumer product and food contact product safety and regulatory compliance.  She leads the Chemical Management Team in providing chemical management strategies, implanting chemical management plans, and conducting risk assessments for clients in consumer product industries and food contact product industries as well as their supply chains.  

Huqiu’s work experience covers the whole supply chain of consumer products, including chemical manufacture, material manufacture and compounders, and consumer product manufacture. Prior to joining Intertek, she was Director of Packaging, Scientific and Regulatory Affair, The Coca Cola Company.  Huqiu’s earlier career also included Head of Regulatory Service for Ciba Specialty Chemicals NAFTA region; Program manager of Global Food Contact and Healthcare programs for GE Plastics; and Product Stewardship at BASF.  Her expertise includes chemical hazard identification, exposure calculation and risk assessment, as well as global food contact regulations.  She was invited as speakers in numerous international conferences in her areas of expertise.   

She is an active member of the Society of Plastics Industry (SPI), Food, Drug, and Cosmetics Packaging Material Committee, former Chairman of the International Subcommittee.  She played the critical role in opening communication channel between the US FDA and China MOH agencies, and building relationship and establishing project collaboration between the US SPI and China MOH agency in the areas of food contact material safety and regulations.

Kimberly Sheehy is a Chemical Safety Manager on the Chemical Management Team in Intertek’s Health, Environmental, & Regulatory Services (HERS) group, where she manages the global food contact chemical safety and regulatory compliance business. Kim earned her Master of Science degree in biochemistry at Northern Illinois University with her thesis on the biophysical characterization of nanobodies. After graduation, she spent 3 years in academic research focused on protein engineering at the University of Chicago, for which her research was published. Prior to coming to Intertek, she worked in research and development for the global leader in industrial water treatment.

Since joining Intertek in 2015, Kim has been promoted from Project Manager to Chemical Safety Manager for the Chemical Management Team. In her new role, Kim is responsible for developing and managing a team of global food contact compliance specialists. With her expertise in food contact compliance, Kim assists clients with multi-regional compositional compliance assessments and regulatory test design and optimization. During her first year at Intertek, Kim implemented, hosted, and now presents at the Chemical Management Team’s annual Global Food Contact Chemical Safety and Regulatory Compliance seminar, which has continued to grow in success over the years.

Sarah Saminadin-Peter is a Regulatory Affairs Expert who started a career as a researcher in Biological Chemistry and System Biology at Harvard Medical School. Graduated from the Ludwig Maximillian University (LMU) of Munich, in her researches, she developed analytical methods to performed high-throughput 3D imagining and to target impact of changes that occur in the non-coding DNA. She worked at Harvard for several years and published scientific articles in high ranking scientific journal.

She moved career path 5 years ago to become a regulatory affair for food contact materials and materials in contact with drinking water. She is currently assisting clients on worldwide strategic regulatory compliance and organizing regulatory training.

She is now the Manager for Strategic Development of Food Contact for EMEA region at Intertek Health Environment Regulatory Services based in Germany.

Ellen Gao, Ph.D. is a Senior Regulatory Specialist with expertise in analytical chemistry. She provides technical expertise in the regulatory compliance of substances used in food-contact materials. She assists companies in obtaining food-contact clearances for their products in China. In addition, Dr. Gao provides technical and scientific support to the new chemical notification in China. Ellen Gao is a certified toxicologist by China Society of Toxicology.

Prior to joining Intertek, Dr. Gao was as a Technical Director in an accredited GLP laboratory for ecotoxicology test of new chemicals. Her primary focus was physiochemical property test and analytical method development and validation of variety of new chemicals.

Dr. Gao obtained her Ph.D. in Pharmacognosy from Tsinghua University, Peking Union Medical College. The focus of her thesis was the isolation and characterization of steroid natural products from Actaea asiatica H. Hara. In addition, she researched the cytotoxicity of steroids isolated.

During Dr. Gao’ Post-doctoral studies in CNRS (France), she explored bioactive natural products from marine sponge. Further, she worked as Senior Scientist in City University of Hong Kong for the project of Hong Kong Chinese Materia Medica Standard (HKCMM) sponsored by Department of Health of Hong Kong, focusing on the setting up of qualitative and quantitative standard of traditional Chinese medicine used in Hong Kong.

Kevin is co-founder and owner of Decernis and is an experienced regulatory attorney who has worked and consulted for 20+ years in the food and consumer products space. He advises some of the world’s largest manufacturers on Food, Food Contact and Supply Chain Compliance challenges globally. Working with a team of native speaker experts in all major markets, Kevin has led a Decernis team effort to expand regulatory coverage to over 200 countries. He spends much of the year meeting with clients to identify and satisfy their needs across the Decernis global client base. Kevin builds cooperative and partnering relationships with governmental agencies and organizations (today 40+ countries across five continents, including US FDA, European Union, Canada, China, India and Japan).

An expert on food contact and food additive regulation globally, Kevin is a frequent speaker at international conferences and an active participant in the Regulatory Affairs Committees of food, cosmetic and consumer product associations. Kevin also attends the Codex Alimentarius Committee on Food Additives in China annually as a member of the International Food Additives Council. 

Kevin has lived and worked for seven years across five European and Asian countries and is fluent in German, French, Italian and Spanish. He possesses an honors Juris Doctor, an LL.M. in International Law and the Hague Diplôm de Droit International. In 1992, he was awarded an Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowship in Bonn and later taught International Law courses at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität in Kiel, Germany.

Chantel Stennis is a project manager and chemist in the Health, Environmental, and Regulatory Services (HERS) division at Intertek where she assists in the coordination and management of the Chemical Management Team’s projects, for both retainer and non-retainer clients. Aside from managing projects, she uses her knowledge in regulatory and compliance of chemicals to help deliver consumer product projects, including toys & children’s products and appliances. Her work also includes global food contact material compliance, tracking global chemical recalls in consumer products, and she has developed chemical databases for clients.

Prior to joining Intertek in 2016, Chantel received her Bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from Lewis University. While there, she conducted her undergraduate academic research on hydrogels and her senior independent research on the biosynthesis of performance enhancing drugs (PEDs), specifically in athletes. She in an Advisory Board Member of a nonprofit organization called Girls 4 Science, which introduces and encourages grade school girls to get involved in the STEM field. Chantel has been admitted and is enrolled to begin her Master’s at Northwestern University School of Law.

 

Nicholas Jermstad

Nick Jermstad is an experienced toxicology and regulatory specialist in both large consumer goods and raw material supplier settings. His areas of expertise include risk assessment, food packaging regulation, global personal care regulations, and toxicological testing, specifically in vitro testing. Nick has experience completing regulatory submissions for a variety of applications including cosmetic ingredients, food contact substances, biocides, treated articles, medical devices, and global chemical inventories with regulatory bodies across the globe including the US FDA, US EPA, ECHA, and Chinese FDA and EPA. Before joining Intertek, Nick worked as a Senior Toxicology and Regulatory Specialist at Bostik Inc. which is a global leader in adhesives providing customers with support on regulatory and safety issues on a global basis. Prior to that, he worked for 7 years for Lonza (formerly Arch Chemicals) which is the world’s largest supplier of biocides. There he supported biocide registrations in the U.S., EU, and China. In addition, he had global responsibility for their cosmetic ingredient business. Before joining Arch, Nick worked at S.C. Johnson as a Toxicology Assistant. Nicholas earned a Masters in Science Degree from the University of New Haven in Environmental Science with a Concentration in Environmental and Human Health. He has earned a B.S. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a double major in Pharmacology & Toxicology and Biology.
