Global RoHS, REACH and Related Services
Intertek, the leading provider of quality and safety solutions to a wide range of industries worldwide, has further expanded its environmental compliance offering in the USA.

Intertek acquired the assets of Contract Manufacturing Services (CMS) based in New Jersey, USA and their two key managers and consultants. CMS is a leader in implementing environmental compliance for product manufacturers, including RoHS compliance, Environmental Compliance Process assurance, Green House Gas (GHG) emission and Carbon Credit programs. This will bolster Intertek’s existing global restricted substances and environmental compliance services particularly in relation to REACH (1), RoHS (2), ErP (3), and California Proposition 65 (4).

The new resources adds to Intertek’s environmental compliance related centres-of-excellence in North America and facilities across the Asia Pacific and EMEA regions in supporting global retailers, manufacturers, and distributors of consumer, electrical and commercial goods. Intertek provides a range of quality and safety services internationally and the Group’s systems certification, environment and CSR-related supply chain services in particular, can be included in a tailored ‘full-suite’ environmental and restricted substance solution for customers.

Ruud Overbeek, Global Director of Intertek’s Restricted Substances business, said “We are continually enhancing our global network, facilities and breadth of services to help customers across all industries. These new resources bring us additional consulting and training, on-site implementation, program outsourcing, testing and auditing, and certification capabilities as we support clients needing to address environmental and restricted-substances issues in their supply chain and manufacturing.”

Notes:

1. Registration, Evaluation, and Authorization, of Chemicals (REACH) requires all chemicals of one tonne or more in volume that are manufactured in or imported into the European Union each year to be tested for health and safety and registered with a new central European authority.
2. Restriction of Hazardous Substances legislation (RoHS) restricts the use of six hazardous materials in the manufacture of various types of electronic and electrical equipment.
3. Energy-using Products (EuP) legislation defines conditions and criteria for setting, through subsequent implementing measures, requirements regarding environmentally relevant product characteristics and allows them to be improved quickly and efficiently.
4. California Proposition 65 is a law promotes clean drinking water and keep toxic substances that cause cancer and birth defects out of consumer products. The law requires that anyone at reasonable risk of exposure be informed when substances classified as toxins are present.
