Shahrzad Tafazoli, Ph.D., Senior Manager, Toxicology, Chemistry and Regulatory Affairs, Food & Nutrition Group
Dr. Shahrzad Tafazoli is a Senior Manager within the Food & Nutrition Group. She has applied her broad background in chemistry and toxicology in a number of projects relating to the safety assessment of novel molecules for use in human sensory trials, from sip and spit to consumption studies, utilizing a structure-activity relationship (SAR) approach. Using this approach, Dr. Tafazoli has evaluated the safety profile of several novel substances, such as plant extracts, fermentation products, and fungal secondary metabolites, based on the toxicological safety data available for the structurally-related substances/surrogates. She also has been involved in successfully preparing several GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) dossiers, Novel Food petitions, and Natural Health Product License Applications for approval in the United States, European Union, Australia, and Canada.
Dr. Tafazoli received her B.A.Sc. in Applied Chemistry and continued her graduate studies at the University of Toronto, where she obtained her M.A.Sc. in Chemical Engineering. She further obtained her M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Toronto with a focus on Molecular Toxicology and Pharmacology.
Dr. Tafazoli has published several peer-reviewed journal articles regarding mechanisms of toxicity and the safety of food additives, vitamins and drugs, and has presented her research at various international scientific meetings, including the Society of Toxicology and the International Society for the Study of Xenobiotics. During her graduate studies, Dr. Tafazoli has been awarded several scholarships, including the Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) Post-Graduate Scholarship. She is a member of the Society of Toxicology.
