Maximize the performance and efficiency of your Formula E vehicles with our state-of-the-art EV motorsports testing facilities

With the continued advancement of electric vehicles within the commercial automotive market, Formula E has provided many technological breakthroughs in its drive to create the pinnacle of electric racing.

Unlike Formula 1, manufacturers within this emerging wing of EV motorsports have tight budget controls to ensure a large spend can’t deliver a faster lap. To reduce costs, manufacturers focus is primarily spent on fine-tuning the powertrain system. For the powertrain engineers, the challenge begins with understanding the nuances that impact performance and efficiency, requiring detailed, high-resolution data that cannot be supplied by conventional test systems.

Intertek provides support for Formula E manufacturers vehicle development and by utilizing our state-of-the-art test equipment; our in-house engineers are able to provide highly specific and detailed test data at rapid speeds, on a 24/7 year-round basis.

With over 30 years’ experience supporting customers with their testing requirements, our engineers are highly skilled at providing automotive testing in areas such as: electric vehicle propulsion systems (EV) testing, fuel, lubricants and EV fluids testing, and Powertrain Systems testing

About our facilities & capabilities

Our UK test facilities in Milton Keynes operate 32 engine and driveline, powertrain test cells and six dedicated electric vehicle (EV) test cells on a 24/7 basis to provide our customers with rapid turn-around times. Over the years, we have extended our powertrain testing capabilities to include the testing and optimisation of eMobility driveline systems, including electric and hybrid-electric powertrains.

With the introduction of our new Centre of Excellence for EV Propulsion Systems testing, our facilities will offer test cells dedicated to supporting Formula E customers, with enhanced dyno speeds to enable the powertrain testing capabilities they require. This new facility will encompass 11 EV powertrain test cells, a complete four-wheel drive full vehicle climatic test chamber, low inertia electric axle module test rigs up to 800kW, three state-of-the-art eMotor dyno rigs operating at speeds of up to 27,000 rpm, and several specialist eMachine development rigs.

Our engine and eMotor dyno rigs are all fully accredited by the UK’s Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA) for conducting European ECE Regulation 85 (engine power) approval tests and the entire site is covered by our ISO9001 certification.

Our fuels and lubricant testing cells are also covered by UKAS ISO 17025 accreditation as well as being recognised by the CEC and the ATC ERC.

Our European Centre of Excellence for EV Propulsion systems testing provides a range of high-speed and high-data streaming test services to maximise your Formula E vehicles. These include but are not limited to:

  • eAxle 2WD
  • eAxle 2WD – with removable partition with above to create full vehicle 4WD test chamber
  • 300kW, 27,000rpm eMachine Dyno
