Intertek UK leads the development of low emission electric and hybrid vehicles of the future

Milton Keynes, United Kingdom - Intertek, a leading global Total Quality Assurance provider to industries worldwide, is helping to future proof the UK and European automotive industry by ensuring it has some of the best commercially available e-motor and hybrid driveline testing facilities in the UK. These services are helping manufacturers to optimise efficiency, range and hybrid powertrain emissions and thus enabling them to develop the next generation of low impact, high performance, sustainable vehicles.

This follows a threefold increase in alternatively fuelled car registrations over the past five years, now reaching 4.2% of the total UK market share, and is against a background of more than 80 different alternatively fuelled models now available in Britain, where the sale of new conventional Diesel and petrol cars and vans will be banned from 2040.  With ever more stringent emissions legislation pending, Intertek has agreed further investment in its state-of-the-art Milton Keynes test facilities and expertise to ensure its clients remain at the forefront of the next generation of automotive development, and to fundamentally support its longstanding OEM partners to develop the best hybrid and electric vehicles for the future.

Intertek’s latest e-motor testing facilities and expertise push the boundaries of automotive EV motor speeds and efficiency for the development of the next generation of PHEV and BEV vehicles. By increasing the capacity of its driveline development operation, including more battery simulators and increasingly complex input models to enable testing of real world driving situations in its test cells, Intertek now offers one of the most comprehensive, driveline emissions-testing programmes commercially available in the UK.

The Milton Keynes facility has three dedicated, state-of-the-art e-motor optimization testing cells which push the drivetrains of the future to speeds of over 20,000 rpm in a bid to maximize both driveability and efficiency.  The site now boasts eight hybrid optimization test cells which can run HEV driveline tests with battery simulators, state-of-the-art HIL (Hardware-In-Loop) models and the latest emissions analysis equipment to test every aspect of the next generation drivetrains from real driving emissions (RDE) and legislative test cycles through the employment of complex input models which Intertek have created.

These highly developed tests, far more real than the heavily stylized emissions testing drive cycles used on chassis dynamometers, use models of actual human driver behaviour, varying road and traffic conditions, altitudes and other unexpected inputs to model real driving situations and to ensure the vehicle driveline control systems are both efficient and clean.

David Meek, Engineering Director, Intertek UK said: “Intertek continues to work with our clients, key legislative policy makers and wider stakeholder groups in the air quality and greenhouse gas space to ensure we are well placed at the forefront of electric and hybrid driveline development.  Intertek can provide the quality of testing, inspection and certification that allows Europe’s leading manufacturers to truly understand the implications and impact of their technology on the environment. Having proudly worked in partnership with the leading automotive manufacturers for over 30 years, we are delighted to broaden our offering so we provide the best quality testing solutions to our customers now and in the future.”
