Intertek warns manufacturers of tighter European laws on PAH, as cancer link proven

Leicester, UK - Intertek, a leading global quality solutions provider, is providing expert polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) testing to manufacturers in advance of the December 27th deadline for tighter European regulations on potentially cancer-causing PAHs in rubber and plastic components.

Scientific studies have found that PAH, which are easily absorbed through the skin, not only cause short term skin reaction, but are also potentially carcinogenic. So from December, European regulations will limit the maximum concentration of PAH in any rubber or plastic component which comes into contact with the skin or oral cavity.

Intertek experts have been preparing clients for some time for these tighter regulations which will affect products such as watch straps, costumes, utensils, bags, stationery, sports equipment, clothing, footwear, and gloves, where the maximum concentration will be 1 part PAH per million. The new regulations have even tighter regulations for toys and childcare articles with a lower maximum PAH of 0.5mg/kg.

Dr David Elks, Technical Manager said, "We have been working with our manufacturer and retailer partners for some time to prepare for these changes and the additional scrutiny that will follow. This is important because if a product is found to be non-compliant, not only can it be withdrawn from the market, but it can result in heavy fines and possible criminal prosecution."

Retail Services Director UK & Eire Christine Smith said, "Intertek's global expertise in product testing, inspecting and certifying, enables us to work in partnership with our clients to enable them to stay ahead of changes in legislation and be prepared in advance."
