Solving biomaterial development challenges through partnership

Allentown, USA - Intertek (LSE: ITRK) – Intertek, a leading quality solutions provider to industries worldwide, and the New Jersey Center for Biomaterials (NJCBM) have developed a successful project model to address biomaterial polymer processing issues.
A biomaterial is a substance, either derived from nature or synthesized, that interacts with biological systems. They are primarily used in the medical industry as part of medical devices (such as heart valves, joint replacements, or artificial tissues/ligaments). Understanding biopolymer processing is a key step in moving a biomaterial from the concept and laboratory scale to one of commercial utility.
In this regard, Intertek and the NJCBM have worked together to address biomaterial polymer processing issues. Specifically, a research program was conducted to understand and mitigate foaming issues for a polymer bone fixation device. After determining that the foaming was primarily caused by volatile compounds (and not polymer decomposition), methods were developed to extract the volatile compounds, achieving a significant reduction of volatiles without impacting the molecular weight of the biopolymer.

The program of study and its results will be highlighted by Dr. Vratsanos during a presentation at the upcoming 12th New Jersey Symposium on Biomaterials Science October 6-7, 2014 in New Brunswick, New Jersey.
