Leicester, England – Intertek, a leading provider of quality and safety solutions serving a wide range of industries around the world, is proud to announce its investment in local capabilities and facilities to better serve local and global customers’ needs. In recognition of this investment, Intertek Consumer Goods UK in Leicester will host an Open Day on 2 November 2011 to celebrate the completion of the renovated chemistry laboratories and laboratory expansion. By offering more local services to UK and European clients, Intertek will help clients achieve cost efficiencies on sample shipping costs and increase speed to market.

“The expanded facilities contribute a marked improvement to our carbon footprint by using more energy-efficient equipment. For instance, although we have doubled the number of fume hoods, we now use 80 percent less electricity for double the capacity,” says Gary Mawston, Managing Director, Intertek Consumer Goods UK.

“The new chemistry laboratory expansion doubles our Leicester laboratory’s capacity for chemical testing, which helps us respond to the greater demand of azo and phthalate testing work,” says Dr. David Elks, Laboratory Manager for Toys and Hardlines, Intertek Consumer Goods UK.

The chemical testing areas are now split into organic and inorganic specific laboratories. By doubling floor area and improving the ergonomic work flow, sample movement has been minimised for greater efficiency, as well as improving chemists’ movements through the laboratories.

The 150-square-metre chemistry laboratories are equipped with new state-of-the-art instrumentation to augment the existing equipment and provide comprehensive chemical and environmental testing to customers. The purpose-built mass spectroscopy suite boasts four GCMS (gas chromatography mass spectrometry) units and a new LCMS (liquid chromatography mass spectrometry) unit, which will enhance the range of tests performed on-site. The renovation also includes a new ICP-MS (inductively coupled plasma with mass spectrometer) suite, which will allow testing to the lower detection limits required by the New EU Toy Safety Directive.

The candle laboratory improvements increase the capacity of candle testing by 30 percent. The conditioned air buffer allows more candles to be lit at the same time, which increases the number of wicks burning simultaneously by 100 percent. The centralised temperature data logging and heat removal systems provide consistently ambient conditions all year round to better execute candle testing protocols.

The Open Day will consist of a guided tour of the laboratory and offices, a buffet lunch with experts and the opportunity to network with industry colleagues.
