Intertek (www.intertek.com), one of the world’s largest testing, inspection, and certification companies, announced its new Carbon and Green Services Division in Mexico at the Institute of the Americas’ Annual Conference “Accelerating the Carbon Credit Market in Mexico” held on February 4th, 2009 in Mexico City, Mexico. Intertek, as a key sponsor of the event, showcased its green services providing strategic consulting, project development, certification for carbon markets (including Green House Gas reduction projects) and LEED-certification.

Ambassador Jeffrey Davidow, President of the Institute of the Americas and Juan Elvira Quesada, Secretary of Mexico’s Department of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) opened the event with effective and positive respective speeches.

Mr. Elvira’s discussion focused on the Kyoto Protocol and its importance for the emerging opportunities in Mexico. Other speakers also detailed their perspective on this emerging market, including economic impacts covered by the outcomes

During a panel discussion on the growing market for carbon credits in Mexico including Sue Stendebach (Senior Assistant; EPA), Lenny Honschild (General Manager; Evolution Markets, Inc.) and Brian Guzzone (Project Developer; Ameresco, Inc.), Dr. Ruud Overbeek spoke about Intertek’s solutions for developing carbon projects. Noting Intertek’s strategic role in consulting and offering process solutions towards GHG emission reduction projects, Dr. Overbeek also promoted the independent Intertek Certification and Accreditation services, another strong area of Intertek’s carbon services.

Intertek Mexico’s General Director, Michael LeBlanc stated, “I’m very proud of what we’re doing. It’s something you can bring home to the dinner table and discuss with your family”, clearly referring to the importance of helping the environment by reducing the greenhouse gas emissions. Michael LeBlanc encouraged the attendants to work together on developing the carbon based market in Mexico, thereby helping fight climate change and sustain corporate financial growth.
