Anti-ageing Cosmetic Clinical Studies

Anti-ageing clinical studies for cosmetics and consumer products by experienced dermatologists delivering scientifically robust human efficacy data

Robust clinical trials are vital to proving the effectiveness of cosmetic anti-ageing products. The skin - and indeed all tissues in our bodies - are subject to aging due to the passage of time known as 'intrinsic ageing'. Skin also experiences extrinsic aging due to exposure to environmental factors such as sunlight and pollution which can cause photoaging.

To demonstrate a reparative or an anti-ageing effect for a cosmetic product, human clinical trials, conducted by trained investigators, must be scientifically robust and meet industry standards providing meaningful evidence on the effects of the consumer product.

Our dermatology experts conduct anti-aging human trials for cosmetics, beauty,  personal care products and consumer devices focusing on the common signs of skin ageing including wrinkles and fine lines, skin sagging or laxity, age spots, dull complexion or dryness. Working from a risk based approach; our dermatologists design bespoke protocols for your product, generating cost-efficient and highly credible clinical trial data which will support your product development or claim substantiation.

Visual anti-ageing assessment by our dermatologists include wrinkles using a photographic scale, assessment of skin sagging, skin laxity, appearance of age spots, pigmentation and skin tone uniformity. We can additionally provide Illustrative photography in standardized conditions (diffused light) with self-perception assessments.

We offer a range of measurement techniques conducted by trained technicians with experience in instrumental measures and clinical image capture and analysis.

  • Skin replicas and image analysis using Monaderm Quantirides/ Quantilines softwares (wrinkles (number, length, depth) and cutaneous micro relief analysis)
  • Fringe Projection analysis using Primos (wrinkles and cutaneous micro relief analysis)
  • Photographic acquisitions in standardized conditions and analysis using Visia CR (wrinkles, age spots analysis)
  • Diastron Dermal Torquemeter and Ballistometer (Firmness/Elasticity measurement)
  • Courage + Khazaka Corneometer/ Tewameter (hydration and skin barrier function)

We can perform skin sampling techniques including tape stripping,  D-squame sampling and punch biopsy methods. These capabilities are underpinned by tissue sampling and GLP / GCP compliant bioanalysis in laboratories which hold a Human Tissue License from the UK Human Tissue Authority.

Intertek has considerable Total Quality Assurance expertise in the recruitment and management of clinical trials to determine the efficacy and safety of anti-ageing products. Our mission is to provide our trial participants with excellent professional care, and provide our sponsors with the highest quality research services. With Intertek Clinical Research Services as your dermatology trial partner we can accelerate your product development through scientifically credible dermatology trials.

We offer a strong participant recruitment resource and maintain one of Europe’s largest characterized databases of over 12,000 pre-qualified volunteers to facilitate prompt recruitment. Volunteers are characterised by a number of therapeutic areas such as skin type (based on the Fitzpatrick scale), skin condition (e.g. dry skin) and wrinkle severity.
We work to the European Cosmetic, Toiletry and Perfumery Association (COLIPA) guidelines including the Guidelines for the Evaluation of the Efficacy of Cosmetic Products, Guidelines on the Management of Undesirable Event Reports, Product Test Guidelines for the Assessment of Human Skin Compatibility and the Guidelines for the Safety Assessment of a Cosmetic Product.
Intertek dermatology clinical facilities comprise five sites in the UK that offer an optimal blend of practicality and flexibility. All sites have the capability to accommodate studies in different indications with high quality clinical spaces including private examination rooms, interview areas, sample preparation and dosing stations. The versatility of our sites and staff allow us to maximize project scheduling opportunities by providing equivalent facilities and skills across a variety of locations. Through a number of established research partners, we also also able to set up new innovative techniques to assess any novel claims.
