Standard: NFPA 80 – Standard for Fire Doors and Other Opening Protectives

Certification Required: NFPA 80 is a standard that addresses the installation, inspection, and maintenance of opening protectives and is not a laboratory test standard. As such, third-party product certification to this standard is not required; however, listed and labeled opening protectives are required to be installed, inspected, and maintained in the field in accordance with this standard. References to NFPA 80 can be found throughout the International Building Code in Chapter 7 for various types of opening protectives.

Scope: Installation, inspection, and maintenance of opening protectives in the field to protect against the spread of fire and smoke.

Applicable Products: Assemblies and devices used to protect openings in walls, floors, and ceilings.  Examples include swinging doors with builders hardware, swinging doors with fire door hardware, horizontally sliding doors, vertically sliding fire doors, rolling steel doors, access doors, chute doors, fire windows, fire dampers,

Test Procedure: NFPA 80 is not a laboratory test method.  It does reference other laboratory test standards though, including fire test standards for various opening protectives.
