Amendment to K-REACH
On 28th February 2018, South Korea's National Assembly passed an amendment to K-REACH first proposed on 28 December 2016. The amendment, which transforms the original legislation sets the implementation date for changes to begin from 1 July 2018.
Significant changes for existing substances have been introduced but, put simply requires:
- registering all existing substances with the potential to cause serious danger to human health or the environment;
- registration for existing substances where total import or manufacture is one ton or above per year; and
- notification for existing substances used in volumes of 0.1 ton or above per year.
It is anticipated that the revision of K-REACH will result in the registration of approximately 7,000 existing chemicals (those listed on the former Korean Existing Chemicals Inventory – KECI), over the next 12 years.
