EU – ECHA Announces Addition of 4 SVHCs to REACH Candidate List

On 16th June 2014, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) announced the addition of 4 new substances as Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) to the Candidate List under the Registration, Evaluation and Authorization of Chemical Substances regulation (REACH). This brings the total number of substances on the Candidate List to 155.
The substances are below for reference

Some of the uses of these substances are included below for information
Cadmium Chloride – Used as a pigment, in photovoltaic panels (solar panels and solar charging cells) and in photocopying
1,2-Benzenedicarboxylic acid, dihexyl ester, branched and linear – Used as a plasticiser in flexible PVC products
Sodium peroxometaborate – Used as a bleaching agent in washing detergents and machine dishwashing products
Sodium perborate; perboric acid, sodium salt – Widely used in laundry detergents and washing powders
Producers and importers of articles containing any of the four substances included in the Candidate List by 16 June 2014 have six months from that date to notify ECHA if both of the following conditions apply:
- the substance is present in those articles in quantities over one tonne per producer or importer per year, and
- the substance is present in those articles above a concentration of 0.1% weight by weight.
