Within the area of food contact materials, migration limits have been set for many substances based on the toxicological risk assessment of these substances. These limits are included in Food Contact regulations with the aim to control the exposure to these substances to protect our health. Migration is the transfer of chemical substances from food contact materials into food.

For plastic materials, 3 main requirements have been established in Commission Regulation (EU) 10/2011:

  • Compositional compliance
The chemical composition needs to be compliant with a positive list of substances allowed for use in plastic food contact materials.
  • Overall migration limit
The sum of all substances migrating from the material needs to be below 10 mg/dm² of contact area
  • Specific migration limits
Some substances on the aforementioned positive list, are subject to a limit which is specific to that substance, a specific migration limit. To be able to perform tests against these limits, the composition of the material needs to be known.
In this webinar, our Application Specialist Food Contact, Kathelijn Nafzger, explains the assessment of the composition and introduces migration testing according to Plastic Regulation EU 10/2011. The possibility of worst case calculations which might reduce specific migration testing will also be discussed.
