Suspension strangulation is caused when one’s airflow is interrupted. Infants are particularly susceptible to this type of strangulation. Ligature strangulation occurs when the blood supply to the brain is closed off. Children of all ages are vulnerable to ligature strangulation.
Intertek has developed a model that allows the simulation of both types and has worked cooperatively with The Children’s Hospital, Denver, in the development of the Strangulation Hazard Assessment Model. This research project was honored as the winner of the prestigious Seymour Cohen Award- a prize awarded by the American Broncho-Esophagological Association for the best original research conducted by a resident, fellow or attending physician.
