North America Instructor Region
Dr. Robert Altkorn is a Senior Technical Advisor with Intertek. He holds a Ph.D in Chemistry from Stanford University and has over 20 years of experience in the areas of chemical analysis, materials science and restricted substances. Dr. Altkorn has extensive experience with a wide variety of organic and inorganic chemical analysis techniques and test methods, restricted chemicals regulations, voluntary chemicals guidelines, California Proposition 65 settlement issues and sources of restricted chemicals in consumer products. He is an active member of several ASTM restricted-substance standards committees, and is the author of over 50 publications and holds two patents.
Xiao Chen is an internationally recognized expert in risk assessment. Her work involves the application of risk modeling to a diverse set of business and governmental issues, ranging from consumer product safety to corporate social responsibility. She has worked with numerous national and international corporations and associations and is a frequent presenter at U.S. and international meetings. She also advises governmental and non-governmental organizations on the practical implementation of risk assessment. She is the author of over 30 publications and is a core member of the EuroSafe Working Group on Risk Assessment. She holds a Master’s degree in Statistics from the University of Illinois and a Master’s degree in Molecular Biology from the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Scott Milkovich is Senior Vice President for Intertek's Product Safety Insight global operations and a distinguished scholar of composite material evaluation, non-destructive assessment, structural analysis, and process control. As both scientist and staff instructor, he was responsible for the creation of the Composite Materials Processing Laboratory at Northwestern University. His clinical experience spans over 25 years researching product safety techniques and practices from analysis of electronic support structures on the B-2 Stealth Bomber to physical modeling of suspension strangulation on adolescents. As the recipient of the Seymour Cohen Award for best original research, he has devoted his career to teaching the masses about risk monitoring and prevention from design to distribution. He has written several articles and journal publications on product safety and is a leading member of SENTAC, ICPHSO, and the ECOSA.
Lauren Rust is a Research Scientist at Intertek who concentrates her work in the research and analysis of foreseeable use, particularly in the area of child development. Her education-related experience includes working in DePaul University’s Clinical Child Psychology department as a Research Assistant and at Advocate Lutheran General Children’s Hospital (Park Ridge, Ill.) as a Child Development Specialist Intern. Prior to joining Intertek, she served as an Assistant Teacher at Hand in Hand Learning Land – Licensed & Accredited Home Based Child Care. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a concentration in Human Development from DePaul University and her Master of Science in Child Development with a specialization in Infancy from the Erikson Institute.
Daniel Stool, skilled inventor and artist, holds the title of Human Factors Research Scientist at Intertek. He is an experienced corporate instructor in the field of safety and a prominent author of over 30 publications. Most recently, he was responsible for the concept and construction of the Virtual Child Models (virtual and physical simulations of the anatomy of children) used in risk analysis. His ability to quantify and assess human anatomy has enabled him to develop accurate hazard models for companies worldwide. Fusing biomechanical properties with advanced computer technologies, he has effectively built groundbreaking simulations such as the Suffocation Hazard Assessment Model and Strangulation Hazard Assessment Model to examine the cause and effect of consumer injury.
Europe Instructor Region
Jeremy Opperer is the European Technical Operations Director for Intertek’s Product Safety Insight group, where he has worked since 2004. He helps his clients to develop, manufacture and distribute safe products in the consumer goods market by investigating potential safety risk issues through assessments on individual products and strategic development of corporate safety processes. Jeremy received his Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering from Northwestern University. He has written and collaborated on several publications regarding quality control and processing, and has presented at various international conferences. In addition, his experience designing toys in the past for a major manufacturer has supported his knowledge and understanding of consumer concern and adherence to safety standards.
Gareth Emerson, Director for Intertek’s Product Safety Insight group, is responsible for the U.K. and European Operations, where he has worked since 2004. With a particular focus on the toy category, he works with some of the world’s largest multi-national companies to ensure protection of their brands and develop safe, legally compliant products and processes. His work ranges from consulting, crisis management and even to the strategic development of corporate safety governance processes. He has a Diploma in the Electrical Engineering, is a qualified ISO Lead Auditor and is currently working toward his MBA through the University of Edinburgh.
Geraldine Cosh is a Senior Safety Engineer Manager for Intertek’s Product Safety Insight group in our European Office. She offers unique support to the engineering team at Intertek with an MSc in Science and BSc in Health Science. She has a skilled background in medical terminology, literature, physical / cognitive processes, as well as child development. She has worked closely with the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), leading ear, nose and throat (ENT) consultants (United Kingdom) and served as a project manager for an EC/government level Pediatric Biomechanics study, which contribute further to her extensive experience in the medical and clinical services industries.
Alice Walker started with Intertek in early 2013 as a Safety Engineer. She has a strong background in process engineering, having worked with a range of products, from medical products to ceramics. She brings practical experience within distribution centers, manufacturing and quality management to Intertek’s European Product Safety Insight group. She received her B.A. Hons Industrial Design & Technology from Loughborough University in 2009 and was in the Young Engineers National Senior Club of the Year in 2001.
Asia Instructor Region
Dr. Nelson Chan, PhD, BEng, CEng, FIMechE - As the Vice President of Asia Pacific Operations for Intertek Product Safety Insight, he has developed consumer product safety and quality assurance programs highlighting injury prevention for many brand name companies. Nelson was educated in the UK and has worked in many countries including UK, Canada, US, China and Hong Kong. He possesses a doctorate degree in Biomedical Engineering and is a Professional Chartered Engineer (CEng). He was elected as a Fellow Member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (FIMechE) for his contribution in advancing the science of engineering and his contribution in engineering education. With his background in the areas of Biomedical Engineering, Injury Prevention and Manufacturing Operations, he also has an extensive experience in the areas of project management, design of laboratory equipment, scientific research and social accountability. In Intertek, Nelson is responsible for the development and operations for Asia Pacific and also manages safety, quality assurance and social accountability programs for customers. He has made extensive contributions to brand name companies to achieve the goal of injury reduction, prevention and social accountability. He also is heavily involved in the research and development of new technologies for assessing hazards on consumer products and has published and array of journals worldwide in the area of biomechanics, safety and quality. He is also a member of ISO working committee on Image Safety.
As an associate member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and a graduate member of the Hong Kong Institute of Engineers, he has organized total quality management and assurance systems for diverse clientele across the globe. Solely responsible for the implementation of ISO 9001/9002 for Meinhardt Consulting Engineers Ltd., he successfully transformed an entire corporation into a quality assertive entity. With over a decade of experience in supplier / vendor relations, he strategically implements site safety and analysis of injury data. He is fluent in English, Cantonese, and Mandarin and a master interpreter of business information systems.
Kelvin Chin is a Safety Engineer with Intertek's Product Safety Insight group in Hong Kong. He has worked in the production and quality industry for 10 years, with a focus on testing of toys and hardline products while working for various consumer product testing laboratories. He has solid experience in product testing and evaluation against safety and performance criteria. While focusing on improving of product safety and performance aspects, he also evaluates and analyzes factory manufacturing systems of a factory using the latest quality tools. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Auckland, New Zealand. He is a Certified Testing Professional (CTP) under the Professional Certification Scheme of Hong Kong Association for Testing, Inspection and Certification Limited. He is also a registered Six Sigma Green Belt and a member of the Hong Kong Quality Management Association (MHKQMA).
Andrew Dale, international product liability lawyer and of counsel at Orrick's Hong Kong office, has extensive experience in international commercial litigation, product liability and internal corporate investigations. His recent accomplishments include examination and resolution of product liability and recall issues, obtaining substantial bank disclosure orders, appointing provisional liquidators, and advising upon legal regulatory issues for prestigious corporations in Asia Pacific and Europe. He has been practicing law in Hong Kong for six years and prior to that in London.
Allan Leung is a Senior Partner and head of Commercial Dispute Resolution Practice in Asia for Lovells law firm. He deals with a broad range of commercial dispute work with particular emphasis on product liability, contentious insolvency, fraud, asset recovery, regulatory affairs, defamation, professional indemnity, and other insurance related matters. He is also involved in PRC related arbitration and litigation for a variety of foreign corporations. Recognized as an outstanding litigator, he has authored, co-authored, and edited prominent publications concerning civil procedures and Product Liability. He was Chairman of the Hong Kong Law Society’s Working Party on Civil Justice Reform (2002 - 2004), is a member of the Joint Tribunal of the Law Society and Bar Association of Hong Kong, and an external examiner of the Postgraduate Certificate in Law Civil Advocacy at Hong Kong University. He also served as a Temporary Master of the Court of First Instance of the Hong Kong SAR.
Lai Cheung Ting
Lai Cheung Ting (CT) is a Safety Engineer / Project Manager with Intertek's Product Safety Insight group in Hong Kong where he provides consultation for product design safety on consumer goods and manages quality assurance programs in manufacturing. Prior to joining Intertek, CT held project management roles in various engineering capacities. He had solid experience in product design, prototyping and testing; research and development; failure analysis and quality assurance. He also served as a Project Coordinator in the Department of Mechanical & Automation Engineering at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, where he was responsible for the management of an internet-based education platform for design and innovation and developed curriculum content for technical and engineering design courses. CT graduated from the National University of Singapore with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering. He is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP) with the Project Management Institute (PMI).
