Impact Hazard Assessment Model

Products that can be launched - intentionally or inadvertently - through the air potentially can cause injuries to sensitive areas of the anatomy.

Most common are serious and permanent injuries to eyes, mouth and facial areas. Intertek's model was developed expressly to evaluate hazards associated with heavy products and flying toys.

How it works: The model measures a product's maximum velocity and mass, material and structural performance, and surface characteristics. A variety of launching mechanisms and targets are employed along with highly sophisticated sensory replicas of the human eye that measure results of impact.

Intertek continues to expand its research capabilities in this area. Current efforts include development of simulated human skin and bone to make possible new levels of scientific analysis
