REACH Substance Identification Testing Services

Intertek offers a complete solution for REACH (Registration, Evaluation and Authorization of Chemical Substances) substance identification requirements.

The Challenge

The Registration phase of the European Union’s REACH Regulation (EC1907/2006) requires the identification and naming of two main groups of substances:

1. Well defined substances - substances with a defined qualitative and quantitative composition.
2. UVCB substances - substances of Unknown or Variable composition, Complex reaction products or Biological materials.

It will be necessary to apply a range of complementary techniques in order to fully establish the substance identity. The ECHA guidelines state that registrants should collect sufficient spectral data to confirm the structure of their substance and to use suitable chromatographic methods to verify composition and purity.

The Solution

Using our accredited analytical services laboratories and global network, Intertek offers a complete REACH testing and characterization solution. The analytical methods to be applied will depend on the nature of the substances themselves. In addition, the level of detail required will depend on the composition and type of impurities found.

Intertek’s Substance Identification Services include:

  • Evaluation of the nature of the substances supplied and provision of advice on testing strategies in relation to potential SIEF or Consortium activity
  • Execution of testing in accredited, REACH-testing specialized analytical centers (if needed GLP)
  • Technical Details for Substance characterization:
    • Tests for elemental composition and purity
    • Minimum spectral data package: UV-Vis, IR and NMR plus a chosen analytical method such as HPLC or GC.
    • Any of the other analytical methods deemed appropriate to support the case (listed below)
    • Methods capable of identifying specific isomers, eg geometrical or optical isomers, particular salt forms, morphologies or any other defining attribute of the substance where relevant
    • Generic descriptors for minerals. Spectral or chromatographic fingerprints showing characteristic peak distribution pattern.
    • Interpretation and verification by a technically qualified individual
    • Access to a wide range of techniques, including: ATR-FTIR, FTIR , Capillary electrophoresis, DSC, Electron impact mass spectrometry, Gas chromatography , Gel permeation chromatography , High performance liquid chromatography , High resolution mass spectrometry, ICP-MS, ICP-OES, IC, LM, MALLS, MS Mass spectrometry , NIR, NMR, Size exclusion chromatography, SEM-EDX, TEM, TGA, UV-VIS, XRD, XRF
  • Recommendations on further testing that may be required (particularly for UVCB substances) in order to meet the requirements for substance ID
