Waterwall Deposit Measurement System™

The Waterwall Deposit Measurement System™ can provide another cornerstone for a comprehensive in-house boiler tube failure reduction program. The benefits of a boiler tube failure reduction program include improved system or plant reliability and maintenance planning, scheduling, and budgeting.

Intertek offers a nondestructive examination (NDE) system for measurement of the deposit thickness in waterwall tubing. Waterwall tube failures are the number one cause of forced outages in fossil-fired power plants. Dirty waterwalls can create several undesirable conditions within a boiler, including excessive corrosion, overheating, hydrogen damage, etc. Current boiler operation practice is to remove samples for determination of deposit loading and the need for chemical cleaning of the boiler. Experience is often the only method used for determination of sample removal locations. Chemical cleaning decisions are then based on incomplete and often erroneous information. The waterwall deposit measurement system can be used to determine the exact location of the thickest deposits in the waterwall, allowing for better identification of sample removal locations. This enables appropriate actions to be planned and scheduled to avoid forced outages and improve power plant reliability.

The waterwall deposit measurement system can provide fast, accurate results and includes several unique features:

  • One person operation
  • Measures deposit thickness down to below 0.01 inch (0.025 mm)
  • Minimal surface preparation required (i.e., no tube surface polishing)
  • Digital signal with storage capabilities
  • Can be used to monitor the chemical cleaning process
