Jet A1 testing certification is performed to DEF standard 91-91; ASTM D1655 and JIG guidelines. Detailed compositional analysis of saturates and aromatics is performed by use of a range of techniques including two dimensional (2D) GC; GCMS and HPLC. Intertek laboratories use in-house expertise and analytical capabilities to analyse normal paraffins, iso-paraffins, naphthenes and aromatics for the carbon number range.
Intertek also provides detailed compositional analysis for Jet A1 and blends with biofuel. In addition to offering complete analysis for biodiesel fuels, rapid testing and quality control is offered for fuel contamination issues, quality confirmation, trace residual analyses and other crucial analyses.
The environmental impact and availability of fuel supply are key challenges facing the aviation industry. There is increased interest in alternative fuels by the aviation industry. Currently the potential use of biofuels based on Fisher-Tropsch tecnology using such sources as coal, methane or biomass is being evaluated. A key success factor in addressing safety concerns is an emphasis on being able to carry out detailed chemical composition of the biofuel jet blends as well as quality monitoring. Intertek Sunbury in the UK is a renown center for jet biofuel research, troubleshooting and development.
