Unit Description

Units P84, P85, P86, P87 and P88 each have two trickle bed reactors in series, online fractionation, recycle, liquid, and an online process gas speciation.

The primary and secondary reactors of each are identically designed and operate isothermally.  They have 6 independent heater blocks and an internal multicouple with 8 thermocouple points.

Additional attributes to note

  • P84, P85, P86, P87 and P88 have the following configuration options:
    • Utilize either only the primary reactor or both the primary and secondary reactors in series.
    • Ability to withdraw inter-reactor samples.
    • Online fractionation via:
      • A pressurized tower.
      • An atmospheric tower.
    • Utilize either once-through gas or recycle gas operations.
    • Liquid recycle.
  • Each unit is steam traced to allow for processing heavier, more viscous materials.
  • Full attention unit with at least one Operator per shift.
  • Remote online project monitoring

Saudi Aramco Arab Light Crude Oil Hydroprocessing and Solvent Deasphalting

In the fall of 2013, Saudi Aramco contracted with Intertek Pilot Plant Services to perform hydrotreating and solvent deasphalting of whole Arabian Light crude oil. For the hydroprocessing, Intertek Pilot Plant Services’ Isothermal Precision Pilot Plant P87 with two 0.434 L reactors in series was employed. Various condition sets were targeted throughout the run to determine the optimal conditions for effective hydrodesulfurization of the Arabian Light crude. For the solvent deasphalting, Intertek Pilot Plant Services’ Light Hydrocarbon Solvent Deasphalting Pilot Plant P73 was employed. Saudi Aramco wished to evaluate the feasibility of rejecting the asphaltenes from the whole crude via deasphalting prior to distillation, hydroprocessing, etc. Both the hydrotreating and solvent deasphalting evaluations were successful in generating the important data required by Saudi Aramco, and Saudi Aramco was very pleased with the support Intertek Pilot Plant Services provided for their research and development needs.

RES Polyflow LLC Hydrotreating Evaluations

In early 2014, RES Polyflow, LLC contracted with Intertek Pilot Plant Services for RES Polyflow’s “Conversion of Plastic Derived Hydrocarbon Liquid to Transportation Fuels” project. Batch fractionation was performed to prepare the necessary fraction for hydroprocessing. For the hydroprocessing, Intertek Pilot Plant Services’ Isothermal Precision Pilot Plant P88 with a 0.434 L reactor was employed. RES Polyflow wanted to be able to determine the equipment and process requirements to be able to produce the most profitable streams from the liquid output of their process. The study completed at Intertek Pilot Plant Services successfully proved a financially and technically viable method for conversion of the RES Polyflow output into fungible commodity fuels.
