Engine coolant quality testing programs for automotive industry manufacturers and OEMs.

Intertek laboratories in Antwerp, Belgium and San Antonio, Texas, USA provide laboratory engine coolants quality testing services and expertise.

The Antwerp laboratory is an ISO 17025 certified laboratory offering a full range of engine coolants test capabilities, in accordance to international standards. The new European engine coolants lab supports local, regional, and global customers.

Intertek offers engine coolant testing programs according to ASTM D3306, BS-6580, and OEM test standards. Coolant testing options include anti-freezes, corrosion inhibitors, cooling systems, concentrates, coolants, glycols, performance, flash point, boiling point, freezing point, foaming power, corrosion protection, trace chemical analysis, and additional tests as needed.

Engine coolant testing methods include

  • ASTM D3306, coolant type:
    • I - Ethylene glycol base concentrate
    • II - Propylene glycol base concentrate
    • V - Ethylene glycol base concentrate containing glycerin
    • III - Ethylene glycol predilute 50 volume % or higher engine coolant concentrate
    • IV - Propylene glycol predilute 50 volume % or higher engine coolant concentrate
    • VI - Ethylene glycol base predilute containing glycerin 50 volume % or higher engine coolant concentrate

  • BS6580, specification for corrosion inhibiting, engine coolant concentrate

Engine coolants must protect engines from severe temperature and corrosion, be compatible with different engine materials, and lubricate engine cooling pumps. If engine coolant quality prematurely degrades and deteriorates, severe damage to the engine and coolant systems can result. Quality testing helps to ensure the coolants meet the demanding physical environment of today's engines.

Coolant samples are be easily shipped to the Intertek’s global network of laboratories, with testing services provided within the 24 hours for urgent samples.
