Enhanced capabilities introduced at Intertek’s state-of-the-art testing facilities, ensuring it stays at the forefront of customers’ automotive development

Milton Keynes: Intertek, a leading global Total Quality Assurance provider to industries worldwide, is pleased to announce it has invested in four new high voltage EV motor and Hybrid transmission rigs at its laboratory, furthering its world class testing capabilities. This investment ensures that Intertek can offer clients the most comprehensive electric vehicle (EV) and hybrid powertrain testing capability available in the UK today.

The facility now has ten high voltage rigs conducting comprehensive EV and hybrid powertrain testing to meet growing demand from customers. Intertek Transportation Technologies, based in Milton Keynes, is the largest independent automotive EV powertrain testing facility in the UK.

The new EV Powertrain test rigs include a high speed 320kW traction motor dynamometer rig which measures the function and performance of electric motors and helps with inverter software development. These enable the testing of motor efficiency, the output capacity and test the thermal performance of motors, through measuring the temperature rise in the motor and heat rejection from it during high power operation.

The electric motors also build on the existing capabilities of Intertek’s electric vehicle powertrain testing processes, which include a high speed 270kW electric motor dynamometer rig, a climatic belt starter/generator spin rig, a high voltage systems test bench and a two wheel drive axle module testing cell. For Hybrid vehicles, the lab offers high voltage transmission test rigs, a full powertrain emissions cell and a transmission spin loss rig.

Intertek Transportation Technologies has more than 30 years’ expertise in fired powertrains and has been testing high voltage EV and HEV systems since 2011.  It also has laboratories in Germany, Sweden, USA and China.

Dave Meek, Engineering Director, Intertek UK Transportation Technologies said: “We are delighted to have extended our offering for EV and hybrid powertrain testing for our UK customers through investing in further testing rigs, as the market continues to grow. By leveraging our end-to-end ATIC solutions and in-house rig and controls design expertise, we enable clients to better understand their equipment and systems in the fast-developing field of EV Powertrain development.

“It’s vital that we stand alongside our customers at the forefront of the next generation of automotive development, and we continue to support our automotive partners to develop the best electric vehicles for the future, through investing and developing our capabilities at our state-of-the-art laboratory.”
