Intertek, a leading Total Quality Assurance provider to industries worldwide, is pleased to announce it is now accredited for the new Gas Appliances Regulation, which from 21 April 2018 will replace the existing Gas Appliances Directive.

The Gas Appliances Regulation (EU) 2016/426 (GAR) for appliances burning gaseous fuels requires new European Union (EU) Certification for any relevant product which is not already in the supply chain. The new Regulation adds a number of mandatory changes, including a maximum 10-year Type Examination certificate expiry date, a CE Mark required for fittings or safety related gas components, and covers an inspection of the whole manufacturing process from raw material, through processing, to the finished product.

The existing Gas Appliance Directive (GAD) will be withdrawn at midnight on 20 April 2018, and EU Council (EC) Type Examination and Surveillance certificates to the directive will no longer be valid for appliances or fittings produced after this date.

Phil Poolley, Intertek Head of GAD Notified Body said:

“Intertek has held the accreditation for the Gas Appliances Directive, now 2009/142/EC (ex-90/396/EEC), for over 20 years and is therefore delighted to be able to offer its customer an ongoing service, with full accreditation to the new Gas Appliances Regulation from 21 April of 2018.

“Manufacturers need to be aware of the impact the GAR will have on their existing GAD certifications as well as on their ongoing compliance and validity. From 21 April 2018, all manufacturers will need to ensure that they are complying with the new GAR requirements, therefore it is important to ensure that they are aware of these changes and are fully prepared for the impact the changes will have on their business. If they are a distributor or importer and supply products in their own brand name, they need to know about the obligations laid out in the new regulation that may have a direct impact on their business,” he added.

The new regulation covers appliances burning gaseous fuel and fittings, new or second-hand appliances imported from a country outside of the EU, and all forms of supply, including distance sales. Intertek is a Notified Body for the Gas Appliance Regulation (GAR) and Boiler Efficiency Directive (BED) accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS). Intertek are also accredited to test and certify automatic gas control systems under EN 298. In North America, we are an OSHA-recognized Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) and an SCC-accredited Testing Organization (TO) and Certification Body (CB). Intertek offers compliance assessments for EU requirements including EU Type Examination, EU Quality Surveillance, EU Product Surveillance, EU verification of single units, as well as customised global market entry plans for clients marketing appliances worldwide.
