Cape Town, South Africa - Intertek, a leading Total Quality Assurance provider to industries worldwide, has been appointed by Burgan Cape Terminals to provide quality, safety and assurance services during the construction of the Burgan Cape Terminals facility at the Port of Cape Town.

Construction of the Burgan Cape Terminals began in January 2016. The R560million technologically advanced facility will play a vital role in further securing South Africa’s fuel supply. When construction is completed in early 2017, the Burgan Cape Terminals will comprise 118,000m³ of storage space containing a product portfolio that includes diesel, petrol, fame and ethanol for blending. The new terminal will improve logistical efficiency for companies operating in the area via the direct pipeline connection to an inland refinery and the 12m jetty which will offer direct access to vessels.

Intertek will provide quality verification throughout the construction of the terminal which includes independent design reviews, verification of non-destructive testing (NDT) and welding personnel qualifications, as well as witnessing of welding procedure qualifications.  Intertek’s resident engineer will monitor civil and related construction activities such as concrete mix quality, verification of concrete test samples, and the monitoring of bulk earthworks and infrastructure such as roads and retaining areas.

To further support quality verification activities and meet project quality objectives, Intertek will act as third party inspectorate (TPI) on non-statutory equipment from design through to the final inspection and testing. The company has also been appointed as the project’s Approved Inspection Authority (AIA) and will oversee compliance to pressure equipment regulations. The AIA role requires Intertek to independently monitor and assure the compliance of pressure vessels, pressure piping and accessories to specific health and safety standards. In addition Intertek will carry out material verification, review of NDT activities and witnessing of pressure testing all of which are critical to ensure legal compliance under the South African Pressure Equipment Regulations.

“Intertek is proud to support the construction of this state-of-the-art facility”, said Roy Davy, Intertek Business Development Manager. With a quality control record that spans more than 20 years and over 100 projects, we are pleased to have been selected by Burgan Cape Terminals.  We look forward to working closely with their project team; providing assurance, testing, inspection and certification services; and keeping the project on track for its early 2017 completion date.”
