Program Promotes STEM Studies and Careers in Engineering

Arlington Heights, Ill. – Intertek (LSE: ITRK), a leading provider of quality and safety services to a wide range of industries around the world, today announced five students have been selected to receive a scholarship of up to $10,000 and a paid internship. Both are part of a program supporting undergraduate students pursuing studies in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) in the U.S. and Canada.

“At Intertek, we are committed to staying at the cutting edge of science, technology and engineering,” said Gregg Tiemann, Chief Executive of Products at Intertek. “We’re proud to encourage students to pursue these fields and give these standout individuals the chance to further develop their skills and education, while learning from experts in the industry.”

Recipients were selected based on their academic achievements, extracurricular activities, commitment to the field of engineering and leadership in STEM fields.  The individuals selected for this year’s program are:

  • Michael Buonarati, a sophomore at Loyola Marymount University studying mechanical engineering
  • Kelsey Nanneman, a sophomore at Rice University studying bioengineering
  • Thomas Rominski, a sophomore at Pennsylvania State University studying electrical engineering
  • Shelly Schoppe, a junior at the University of Texas at San Antonio studying mechanical engineering
  • Stacey Smolash, a junior at Concordia University in Montreal studying mechanical engineering

"With the Intertek Scholarship Program, we’re not only investing in the future of our company, but also our local communities and the industry," said Darrin Harkness, Intertek’s Vice President of Human Resources, Americas Region. "Intertek looks forward to welcoming this year's recipients to our offices this summer for their internships and we’re pleased to support their continued academic success.”

For a second year, the Intertek Scholarship and Internship program was available to undergraduate sophomores and juniors in the U.S. and Canada who are pursuing careers in engineering. This year’s recipients were selected by a committee of Intertek employees after evaluating applications from across the eligible region.
