Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) launches its new Global Food Traceability Center with founding sponsor Intertek

Manchester, UK - With food traceability becoming increasingly important across the global supply chain, Intertek Food Services are demonstrating their commitment to the challenges faced by the industry through their involvement in the launch of a new global food traceability centre.

Intertek, the global testing, auditing and certification organisation is a founding sponsor of a Global Food Traceability Center which is run in partnership with the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT).

The Center, based out of the USA but with members around the globe, will provide unbiased, knowledgeable and scientific-based advice to the food industry, providing insight and understanding into food traceability. The IFT will act as a central point where industry, academic, and government experts can work together with consumer groups to conduct research, discuss challenges, adopt best practices and implement practical traceability solutions.

William Fisher, Vice President of the IFT, states “It’s fantastic to have a such forward thinking company on board with this programme. We recognised that currently, there is no single entity anywhere in the world providing a global resource or an authoritative voice on food traceability. To have experts such as Intertek as founding partners will help us to generate key research and provide objective and practical advice to the global food industry.”

Chetan Parmar, Senior Vice President for Food Services at Intertek adds “Food traceability is a worldwide challenge; it not only covers the provenance of food but it also needs to ensure the safety and quality of it right along the supply chain from field to fork.

As a founding partner of the new center we hope to share our experiences and knowledge to implement improvements that will ultimately increase the transparency of the supply chain whilst improving the overall safety of food products to consumers around the world.“

Launched at a major event in Washington, DC on the 11 September, the Center has already begun work on a number of key projects which encompass research, protocols and standards, education and training, and technology transfer.
