Intertek Offers ISO 39001 Auditing and Certification Services

New service provides a method for demonstrating road traffic safety

Boxborough, MA —Intertek, a leading provider of quality and safety solutions serving a wide range of industries worldwide, today announced that they have certified their first client to ISO 39001 in Japan, the latest addition to their Business Assurance services portfolio.

ISO 39001:2012 outlines the requirements for a road traffic safety (RTS) management system. This standard enables organisations that work with road traffic systems to reduce serious injuries and death caused by road traffic accidents. 

“Intertek recognizes the importance of road traffic safety management for major transport companies in Japan. It is our objective to provide these organisations with the resources and services necessary to reduce operational and insurance costs by minimizing traffic accidents” said Kiyo Sakai, Intertek’s Business Assurance country manager for Japan.

According to the World Health Organization, injuries related to road traffic accidents are the eighth leading cause of death globally. Additionally, the World Health Organization states that these types of deaths are the leading cause among individuals between the ages of 15-29 years of age.  In 2010, there were 1.24 million road traffic deaths globally.

In Japan, similarly to ISO 39001, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism requires major transport companies to have a transport safety management system in place. This requirement was put in place in 2006 to respond to the increase of accidents in the transport industry caused primarily by human error. This particular system does not cover small and mid-sized businesses. 

In addition to ISO 39001 auditing and certification, Intertek has also held a number of introduction seminars that covered the development of the standard, who the standard would apply to, and the implementation.
