Oak Brook, IL– Inez Tenenbaum, Chairman of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), announced that Gene Rider, president of Intertek Consumer Goods North America, was among five recipients chosen to receive the inaugural Chairman's Commendation Circle Award, which will be presented at a ceremony on Thursday, December 1, at CPSC headquarters. This award recognizes people and groups who have demonstrated consistent and significant contributions to improving the safety of children’s and other consumer products and to the prevention of deaths and injuries associated with using such products.

For 25 years, Mr. Rider has been an international leader in the field of consumer goods risk analysis and design safety while working for Intertek, a leading global provider of product evaluation, testing and certification services for a wide range of industries and consumer products around the world.

Throughout his career, Mr. Rider has worked closely with the medical and consumer advocacy community to develop innovative strategies and technologies for assessing and addressing the risks posed by consumer products and has achieved influential status as a recognized authority on injury prevention, with special focus on adolescent risk exposure. The technologies developed by Mr. Rider and his Intertek colleagues are often applied to help consumer products manufacturers effectively integrate safety into their product design, manufacturing and evaluation processes.

Mr. Rider also serves as an advocate for improving consumer product safety through partnerships with various educational, industry and public safety initiatives. He was involved with the development of Saint Louis University’s new Certificate in Product Safety Management course offered through the Center for Supply Chain Management Studies, the first university-level education program in the country developed specifically for quality assurance and product safety managers and currently teaches a key module of the course: risk assessment and integration of product safety systems into all phases of product design, manufacture and assessment.

In addition Mr. Rider collaborated with RABQSA International, Inc. to develop the Safe Design Professional Certification Scheme (“Saf-D-Pro”), a competency-based personnel certification program to provide international recognition for Certified Design Appraisers who conduct consumer product design safety assessments. He is also actively involved with a number of consumer product safety professional organizations, including the American Society for Testing and Materials, the International Consumer Product Health and Safety Organization and the Eurosafe Working Group on Risk Assessment.

Intertek appreciates and applauds the CPSC Chairman’s announcement and the recognition of these and the many other activities and achievements of Mr. Rider and his illustrious career in helping Intertek customers make safer consumer products.
