Intertek (www.intertek.com), the leading provider of quality and safety services to a wide range of industries, provides a single-source solution for meeting the European Union’s REACH and CLP Regulations’ complex Safety Data Sheet compliance obligations.

Intertek’s team of global regulatory and scientific experts can assist companies and their supply chains effectively and efficiently ensure their Safety Data Sheets (SDS) are REACH, CLP, and GHS compliant. Intertek’s SDS services include: author new or review current SDS’ and labels against regulatory requirements, identification of gaps and required changes, data collection and gap closure for missing data fields, classification of substances and mixtures, translation of hazard symbols to GHS standard, conversion of current SDS and labels into REACH, CLP, and GHS compliant format, and translation into alternative languages as required.

Safety Data Sheets play a critical role in health, environmental and safety regulatory compliance worldwide. When handling and transporting goods, companies must comply with complex regulations including the European Union’s Registration, Evaluation and Authorization of Chemicals (REACH) Regulation (1907/2006/EC), CLP Regulation 2008/1272/EC (classification, labelling, and packaging), and the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) standards. Annex II of the REACH Regulation provides the detailed requirements and format for safety data sheets for substances and mixtures.

The new 16 point data format for Safety Data Sheets is required for substances that are to be shipped into the European Union. Safety Data Sheets are commonly reviewed upon import into the EU and products with non-compliant or non-updated SDS will not be allowed to pass customs. Manufacturers, importers, distributors, and downstream users must make sure their current and future safety data sheets for substances and mixtures comply with REACH, CLP, and GHS requirements to keep their products on the EU market.

“At this time, many companies are unsure of their safety data sheet obligations for regulations such as REACH, CLP, and GHS” comments Dr. Marc Thouin, Vice President of Intertek’s Regulatory Services Operations. “Safety data sheets are outdated and thus not compliant with the current regulations. Many business need to prepare for upcoming SDS regulatory update deadlines and Intertek has designed a comprehensive solution to meet their needs.”

Intertek will present a free 1 hour webinar on May 12, 2011 reviewing the REACH, CLP, and GHS requirements for Safety Data Sheets and how these changes may impact your business. To register, please visit: www.intertek.com/events/2011/sds-webinar
