Intertek, a leading provider of quality and safety solutions to a wide range of industries worldwide, organized a one day seminar in Tirupur, India. The seminar aimed to help garment industry professionals enhance their skill and competence level in meeting core standards detailed by the Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production (WRAP) Certification Program.
Mr. Avedis H. Seferian, Director of Compliance Administration for WRAP, was the speaker and the session provided for an expert discussion in the benefits of WRAP principles. The certification scheme is grounded on the belief that factory-based certification is the most effective way to ensure that facilities are independently monitored for global social responsibility standards – confirming that both the manufacturing process and final product follow lawful, humane and ethical conditions.
More than 40 international brands and retailers currently accept WRAP certification as a guiding standard for their social accountability programs, a number that continues to grow. The certification scheme offers the opportunity to build new business along with strengthening existing ties with U.S. and European brands and retailers who accept the WRAP standard.
“WRAP certification is a great advantage to the Indian garment industry, as it can help decrease total spending of a garment manufacturer while meeting compliance needs by many folds,” said Mr. Dilip Gianchandani, Regional Director for Intertek Consumer Goods. “The implementation of this social and environmental certification is the answer to the needs of many companies, enhancing their credibility in the market. Intertek is privileged to be associated with WRAP in building awareness of these globally recognized compliance standards.”
The industry response was overwhelming with many fabric mills, export houses and buying houses sending in their representatives for this event. Industry representatives commented that the session provided valuable insights and that their attendance overall was extremely worthwhile.

ABOUT WRAP
WRAP is internationally recognized social compliance standard developed by American Apparel and Footwear Association (AAFA). The AAFA is the largest and most representative sewn products trade association in the United States with over 700 member companies.
Many WRAP certified manufacturers have commented that WRAP has not only resulted in more reliable social compliance, but has contributed to greater productivity, lower turnover, improved communications between management and employees, safer working conditions and improved morale. Today, WRAP is being recognized by many retailers and manufacturers as the most reliable, yet economically efficient factory compliance system to assure lawful, ethical and humane manufacturing.
